Build Your Own Hydration Drinks
Introduction
Electrolytes are minerals that help regulate hydration, nerve function, muscle contractions and blood pressure. When you sweat, exercise for long periods, work in the heat or become dehydrated, you lose both water and electrolytes.
Most people don’t need expensive sports drinks every day. In many situations, simple ingredients from your kitchen work extremely well.
The goal isn’t to copy sports drinks perfectly. The goal is to stay hydrated, replace electrolytes when needed and support recovery.

When Should You Drink Electrolytes?
Electrolytes can be useful when you:
- Exercise for longer than 60–90 minutes.
- Sweat heavily.
- Train in hot or humid conditions.
- Work outdoors.
- Recover from vomiting or diarrhoea (seek medical advice if severe).
- Have a medical condition where your healthcare professional has recommended electrolyte replacement.
Water alone is sufficient for many shorter or lower-intensity activities.

Coach Ryan ROSI3R’s Tips
- Sip throughout exercise rather than drinking everything at once.
- Don’t assume more is better—too much sodium or sugar isn’t helpful.
- Match your drink to the demands of the day.
- If you have diabetes, monitor your blood glucose. Recipes containing honey or fruit juice will raise blood glucose, while the low-carbohydrate option may be a better everyday choice.
- If you have cystic fibrosis or another medical condition affecting salt balance, follow the advice of your specialist healthcare team, as your electrolyte needs may differ from the general population.
Bottom Line
Hydration doesn’t have to be expensive.
Water is the foundation. Electrolytes are a tool. Use them when your body needs them, not simply because a drink is marketed as “healthy.”
Food doesn’t have to be perfect. It has to be practical.
